Drinking "alkaline" water, has gained popularity over the last decade. Alkaline water is produced either by using a device called an ionizer or by adding pH drops to water. Either way, the pH of the water is raised well above neutral—sometimes as high as 9 or 10. Drinking this water adds imbalanced alkaline ions to the body and neutralizes acids in the stomach that are necessary for proper digestion.
Ionizing machines called water ionizers, make alkaline water by placing the water in an electric field—separating the positively charged (alkaline) ions from the negatively charged (acidic) ions in water. This produces two streams of water: alkaline water and acidic water. The alkaline water has been advocated for drinking while the acidic water has disinfecting qualities and can be used topically. Ionizers, because they place water within an electric field, have a negative effect on the electromagnetic field of water molecules. They produce aggressive water which is potentially imbalancing for the body.[i] Drinking ionized water or water with a pH higher than 8.5 for long periods of time can be detrimental.[ii]
Gabriel Cousens, M.D.20 explains that the water inside the cell (intracellular water) is acidic while the water outside the cell (extracellular water) is alkaline. This creates an osmotic potential and an electrical gradient that draws water into the cells.[iii] When wastes build up in the body due to poor diet, stress, and disease, the extracellular water becomes acidic. This condition, referred to as acidosis, reverses the osmotic potential and the electrical gradient at the cell membrane and makes hydration difficult. The addition of alkaline minerals without their acidic counterpart robs hydrogen from the body. Active hydrogen is required to acidify the water inside the cell. It is also often the limiting factor in the production of ATP—the cell’s source of energy. Providing alkaline minerals without their acidic counterpart causes numerous imbalances. The best way to maintain a balanced pH is to eat raw foods. Raw food contains an abundance of organic acids (a source of active hydrogen) as well as a plethora of alkaline minerals which are electrically balanced and available for absorption.
